Wilderness Explorer

Watching the credit roll at the end of Up I'm tickled pink when I notice a Wilderness Explorer badge with a slice of pizza on it. Does that mean Russell earned a badge for eating pizza?
Below are the badge designs my kids came up with. Smile.

The Book of Life
Yesterday hubby and I went on a cinema date, the first one in ages. I think the last time we went together was to see Tim Burton's The Lone Ranger. Yeah, that long ago. My Poppet had run a blog giveaway for which I had won tickets to see The Book of Life and I am so glad I got to see this movie. Oh man, it was just so pretty, with all those colours.
And the voices! I am crushing on Manolo [voiced by Diego Luna]. Maria [Zoe Saldana] is the perfect heroine, and Joanquin [Channing Tatum] had me laughing at his bravado, and manly attempts to win a woman's heart.
The film had me wishing I still knew my Spanish. I was reminded of my graceful high school Spanish language teacher, Ms Cerona. I thought about the illustrator, Catalina Estrada, and her work, that I like so much. Now I just want to immerse myself in more hispanic art. I also want to watch the The Book of Life again, and I can't wait to show my daughters - I know they would just love this one. Will just have to wait for the Blu-ray to come out.
Now, I wonder if there are any dolls based on this film.

| Ferris Bueller's Day Off |
One of many iconic film figures from my childhood is the charmingly uncatchable, saveable Ferris. For the uninitiated [or anyone born after the 80s] I am of course referring to the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Several months ago I was excited to find that illustrator Maxim Dalton created a board game based on this film. The board game was created as an art piece for exhibition, so sadly there was a very short run of this board game. Oh my! That board game would have made a great addition to my home. Only I do not know if I would play it, or frame it.

State and Main
State and Main is a wonderful film created by David Mamet. It has many memorable scenes and great lines. The film addresses a situation when Hollywood film makers invade a sleepy, country American town. The results of this occupation makes for clever humour.
One of my favourite moments is when the lead female actress, Claire [sometimes referred to as The Broad by the film crew], tries and fails to articulate her thoughts when she is upset, "Don't- Don't-Because I want to tell you something and I think you know what I mean."
I think I do know what she is trying to say.

500 Days of Summer
When I first heard about this movie I thought how could there possibly be 500 days of Summer. But seeing this trailer, now I get it.
I can hardly wait to watch this film...
Not 100 % certain, but I have this startling notion of an idea that I just might be turning indie hipster chic. Could it be all the Frankie magazines I've been reading and finding a generation hero in Scott Pilgrim. Stay tuned on these thoughts. Maybe.

Who Wouldn't Want This Kitchen?
“It's Complicated” is a fantastic film — funny, well acted story. With quaint settings you'd simply yearn for — such as this kitchen.

Making It Handmade
Today I had a lovely afternoon out in the city. I had such a good time I didn't even mind the rain.
I won a free entry (thank you Pip, of Meet Me At Mike's) into the screening of Anna Brownfield's film Making It Homemade. It was a thought provoking film, and it was good for a few giggles. I even met the Director herself, who in true craft form decorated her hair with two knitting needles — it was very pretty.
The crafters who appeared in the film provided responses to questions that I subconsciously felt, but never knew how to answer before. I suppose watching this film helped me to understand the craft movement I am gradually being drawn into.
When I was sitting in the cinema waiting for the film to begin, I listened in to bits of conversation around me. One person spoke of her knitting — something that was meant to be a gift. She wasn't satisfied with how it was turning out, so she was going to start again. Another person spoke of friends attending the launch of a new comic book. Why am I mentioning this? Because I want to point out how a film about craft can draw in crowds of strangers who are actually creative and like-minded. You would hardly hear this sort of banter at the screening of a regular Hollywood film.
When the film finished I decided to buy the DVD of Making It Handmade. So glad I did. I can hardly wait to watch it again.
P.S. I am halfway through knitting the baby blanket.
P.P.S. What happens next? Who knows. My mind is brimming with sparks of potential.

Excitable Me

Today my Dad gave me an extremely early Birthday present. As in, my Birthday isn't for another two and a half months. I received the film New Moon on Blu-Ray. How good is that? How lucky am I?
I haven't seen New Moon yet, and I am highly addicted to the Twilight saga, so I am very much looking forward to watching this movie.
Almost time to start rereading the saga (Hey! Don't throw that book at me. I told you I'm addicted.)
Thank You Dad!

The Love Letter
Here is a lovely film to watch on a rainy Spring evening - The Love Letter. It stars the delicious Kate Capshaw and hilarious Ellen DeGeneres. It is the perfect thing to watch when you have a head cold or even if you don't have a head cold. Just watch it coz you love a romantic comedy, without the cheese.

I have been bitten!

Okay! So what? I am hooked, line and sinker... on the vampire story Twilight.
It all happened on a Thursday night. Just last week. I drift off into an eventful sleep. Three times that night I dreamt of nothing but Twilight. Which is funny considering the only thing I knew of the film came from the trailers I had viewed several months back. And even more strange was that I hadn't even been thinking about Twilight.
So Friday morning I awaken with an irrepressible urge. I must buy the film Twilight.
I visited Southland, picked up the film at JB, then on my way out I stop off at the bookshop. 'What the heck! I'll go all the way'. I bought the book Twilight, written by Stephenie Meyer, which the film was based on.
I have now watched the film. Twice!
I am reading the book, nice and slowly so I can absorb the words. I normally have this habit of practically speed reading through my books.
My computer desktop now has rotating Twilight wallpaper.
Oh yeah! And I now have the soundtrack.
I have been bitten. I always did like a good vampire film, dating back to The Lost Boys. And now this story is perfect for me, because it is actually a love story rather than being horror based. Swoon.
