Turtle + Other Good Stuff

© Melissa Gaggiano

In the week that has been I have finished making a sweet, fabric sculpted turtle. The turtle is 34cm tall and has a wire armature frame (being a poser is no longer a dirty word). The turtle is available for AUD $250.

I participated in a #drawinyourownstyle activity, playing along with Illustrator, Mel Stringer's Challenge. Aptly hashtagged as #melstringerdrawchallenge.  I had a lot of fun recreating Mel's illustration in my own way.

To recap the week just gone, I have entered my 2018 Sloth Project in Frankie Good Stuff Awards. Simply entering into these awards is a pat on my own back. It's a reward to myself and therefore worth mentioning, again. To find out more about the sloths, go here.

For those interested in making a smaller version of these sloths, there is a tutorial available on Etsy. To buy it simply go here.

Turtle + Sloth

© Melissa Gaggiano

After a couple of weeks of enforced rest, I feel ready and charged to focus on 2019 work. I have begun with the sculpting of a spectacled turtle.

The turtle has not given them self a name... yet. I can tell you that the turtle is made of felt, is being sculpted one section at a time, and began with a basic wire structure. As you can see from the below images, the feet and arms are complete. My next challenge is the neck, head and face.

In other news I have entered my 2018 Sloth collection into the Frankie Good Stuff Awards.

Designing and creating these sloths was a ground breaking project for me. I was applying what I could already do, trying new ideas, and creating a set that told a visual story. I was so happy bringing my passion for doll making, illustration and photography together.

Tiny Heart & Selfie Doll

© Melissa Gaggiano
I have been busy making this felt heart turtle. I haven't made one of my turtles in quite a while so it was a challenge remembering the process. The turtle is intended as a birthday present for later in the week. The turtle comes with a cardboard box. The way I made the box reminds me of old school travel trunks that were made of leather and metal.

Ann-nnnd, in other things! My youngest has been disappointed to hear that a friend will be leaving for another school. She decided to make a farewell gift for her friend. She painted a doll version of herself. The pattern is a scaled version of the daddy doll project that she painted several weeks ago.

Meet Turtle Fred

© Melissa Gaggiano

Meet Fred! Fred is a turtle who dreams of being a snow bunny.Fred loves drinking hot coco with marshmallows in winter and dreams of the day that he'll actually visit a snow mountain. Till that day comes he likes to pretend by wearing his white winter boots, his pretend bunny ears and cotton tail, and decorating his shell with snow and snowflakes.

Head on over to my Etsy store, and there you will find Fred the Snow Bunny dreamer.

Tiny Turtle

It is an achievement and a satisfyingly wonderful thing when the design you construct comes together just as you had hoped. It is an even better feeling when you come back to your work and decide to rejig it - enlarging, shrinking, a different limb, that pattern piece that was a mask can now be a hair bow, that sort of thing.

I recently challenged myself to take my now familiar turtle design and make an even smaller version. There was no knowing if it was going to work. After all smaller may mean using few materials, but it is by no means easier. Big hands doing little things.

In the end I managed it and apart from scaling down the pattern pieces there was only one actual pattern piece change from the original design and that was in the legs.

The only thing left to do is to name this lil turtle baby.

Commissioned Turbo Turtle

© Melissa Gaggiano
This week I am working on a commission piece - Turbo Turtle. This is my third felt turtle, and yet totally unique in his own right. No two… or three turtles are exactly alike. The details on the shell do not follow a pattern and are cut, sewn in an organic way… much like how freckles form. In a world of super mass production I am proud to say that even if my dolls are cut from the same pattern, they will all have a different personality.

Turbo Turtle

© Melissa Gaggiano
And now I have finished making a OOAK handmade felt turbo powered turtle. This turtle has places to be and turtles to see so he likes to move a little faster than the average turtle. So he wears skates on his feet and rockets on his shell. Such a clever turtle!

Turbo Turtle is now available in store. Get in quick!

Turtle Project

A week of ups, a week of downs. Doing things that keeps the world spinning around. When things are quiet on the blog front, often that means things out in the ultra real world are far from quiet. At the moment I am in the middle of a turtle project. Think felt. Think turtle.  Think pizza. Think skates and rocket boosters.

You can follow my progress of the turtle on Instagram.

Turtle Love

© Melissa Gaggiano

Recently, while playing at a friend's house my youngest fell in love with one of their toys - a plush turtle. We went home and I spent the afternoon creating her own little turtle. I can hardly wait for my little turtle dove to meet her new toy turtle.

Good timing for this, I hear that it was international turtle day this week.
